Motorola unveils which phones will get upgraded to Android Marshmallow

Motorola today announced plans to upgrade 11 of its phones to Google’s new Android Marshmallow operating system.

Here is the list, announced in a blog post.

• 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
• 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
• 2015 Moto X Play
• 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
• 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
• 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia² (2nd gen)
• 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE² (2nd gen)
• DROID Turbo
• 2014 Moto MAXX
• 2014 Moto Turbo
• Nexus 6

Motorola, unfortunately, isn’t setting a timetable for the rollout of the upgrades. (The footnote for the Asia markets indicates that “China upgrade is still under evaluation.”)

“We’ll work fast but we won’t push the upgrades out until we know they’re ready,” wrote Moto’s VP of software product management Bjorn Kilburn. “Look for more news on timing in the coming weeks.”

The company will provide more information about timing and device details at its software upgrade page.

Motorola also said it’ll discontinue a number of apps and services that have now been made redundant by functions in Android. Its Moto Assist function will go away because of the “Do not disturb” function in Android’s “Sound and notification” settings. Android’s user data backup functions make Motorola Migrate unnecessary, so that’s getting canned.

Moto’s Chrome browser extension also goes away. “Since we created Motorola Connect, several similar services have shown up on Google Play and many consumers have moved from SMS to other over-the-top messaging services,” Kilburn wrote.

Google’s Android Marshmallow operating system was officially unveiled September 29 at an event in San Francisco. Google also released a couple of new phones meant to showcase the OS — the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.
