Apple releases iOS 9.1 with new emoji, Live Photo improvements, and stability tweaks

Apple released iOS 9.1 today, the first major public update to the landmark iOS 9 operating system that launched last month.

The update applies to iPhones and iPads, and can be downloaded via a free over-the-air update.

This update is more about stability tweaks and bug fixes than consumer-facing features.

However, the new iOS version does feature new emoji, including such necessaries as taco, burrito, cheese wedge, middle finger, champagne bottle, and unicorn head. In all there are 150 new emojis, including Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emojis.

The update lets Live Photos intelligently sense when a user raises or lowers her iPhone, so that the camera will not record these movements. Live Photos is a new feature that records the 1.5 seconds before and after a photo is shot. The movement around the photo can be seen when users press and hold on the image.

Adoption of iOS 9 is now at around 65 percent of all iOS device users, Apple reports.
