The numbers now say that Activision Blizzard is bigger than Microsoft and Sony.
The gaming giant bought mobile developer King yesterday for $5.9 billion in a deal that is sending shockwaves throughout the industry. It also makes Activision Blizzard the gaming company with the second-highest revenue.
We know this because Newzoo released a list yesterday of the top 25 game companies with the highest revenue in the first half of 2015. Yesterday, Activision Blizzard was No. 5 with $2.322 billion, and King was No. 10 with $1.060 billion. When we combine those numbers, Activision Blizzard jumps up to the No. 2 spot with $3.382 billion in revenue.
Activision Blizzard is now only behind Tencent, the Chinese investment company with a majority equity interest in Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, the insanely popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) that earns over $100 million a month. Activision Blizzard is also now ahead of Microsoft and Sony, which were No. 2 and No. 3 on Newzoo’s list yesterday, respectively.
