It may be a little late to the party, but Deezer has finally announced a family subscription plan for its music-streaming service.

Available only to Orange subscribers in France initially, with other markets to follow “in the coming months,” Deezer Family lets up to six people listen to Deezer’s Premium+ service under a single user account for €15 ($16 USD) per month.

Launched out of France in 2007, Deezer is available in more than 180 countries and claims 6 million “total subscribers.” But it hasn’t always garnered the same attention as the competition, perhaps because it has mostly been absent in the U.S. The service did, however, launch in the States last year with a $20 monthly Elite service.

Today’s news comes two months after Google revealed that it was planning to launch a family plan, while Apple Music arrived on the scene with a family-focused subscription of its own. The now-defunct Rdio had offered such an option since 2013, while Spotify joined the family gang in October 2014.

Deezer’s family plan is competitively priced — both Apple’s and Google’s ad-free family plans cost $15/month for up to six users too. Spotify, on the other hand, adopts a tiered approach that offers a 50 percent discount for each additional user. To get six users on a single account, Spotify would cost $35.

Though it’s already possible for people to share their Deezer account credentials with friends and family members, there were restrictions on how many people could listen simultaneously. Plus, things could get messy when people have different tastes in music, particularly when creating playlists. With separate profiles in each account, users can build their own music preferences up over time.

With the new family account feature, Deezer is also offering a “kids” section aimed at those under 6 years of age, with curated music, nursery rhymes, audio books, and more. Then there’s the “Family Mix,” which is essentially a playlist consisting of songs from all profiles on the account — this is likely to be quite an eclectic mixtape.
