Star Wars: Battlefront is a little light on content, but it’s getting more — and not just for players buying the $50 season pass.
Publisher Electronic Arts has revealed that we’ll be getting more free Battlefront maps and Star Cards (which give players extra gadgets and abilities) after the upcoming Battle of Jakku DLC, which launches Dec 1 for anyone that pre-ordered the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC shooter (and a week later for everyone else). This is the first time that EA has mentioned the idea of ongoing free content for Battlefront, and it sounds like a good way to keep players engaged in a multiplayer game that’s initially thrilling but can quickly get repetitive.
In a blog post, Patrick Söderlund, the executive vice president of EA Studios, was quick to point out that Battlefront in its current form is just the beginning. December’s Battle of Jakku DLC will add two new maps, including one for the large-scale Walker Assault and Supremacy modes. It will also introduce a new 40-player mode called Turning Point, which sounds a little like the popular Rush mode in EA’s Battlefield series.
Söderlund explained that EA also has free DLC planned beyond the Battle of Jakku. “Of course, we are also planning to support Star Wars Battlefront with new content well into the future,” he said. “We will be adding more of what you love about the game, like new maps and Star Cards, for free in the coming months, in addition to all of the content we have coming with [the] season pass.”
He didn’t share any further details but added, “We’ll have more to share soon.”
Battlefront’s season pass will start dropping content into the game from early 2016, but it comes at a pretty hefty price — $50 on top of an already $60 game. The season pass content, which will arrive as four separately available DLC packs, includes 16 additional multiplayer maps and 20 new items, including weapons, vehicles, and Star Cards.
