Free-to-play gaming is going big on consoles next week as Wargaming launches its World of Tanks online game on the PlayStation 4.
The title debuts on January 19 on Sony’s video game console. The title has tens of millions of fans on the PC, and it has debuted on Microsoft’s Xbox consoles already. There are clearly more players on PC, but Wargaming chief executive Victor Kislyi has said in past interviews that the players on consoles are more engaged. They’re hardcore game fans, and they’re willing to spend money.
So even if the console population is smaller than the number of players on the PC, free-to-play purchases on the consoles can actually generate a good chunk of money. And that means the appearance of World of Tanks on the PS4, which has sold nearly 36 million units since launch, is a big deal.
The PS4 version has enhanced visuals and limited-time exclusive content for logging into the game. World of Tanks is available on Windows 10 PCs, the Xbox One, and the Xbox 360. World of Tanks Blitz, a mobile version of the game with touchscreen controls, is available on smartphones, tablets, and Windows 10 PCs.
Players who log in before January 31 will get a free tank, the T1E6-PS U.S. Premium Light Tank with exclusive camouflage.
