Some Nvidia users report Blue Screen of Death crashes following update for GeForce driver (update)

You may want to delay updating the drivers for your Nvidia graphics card today.

The chip maker’s latest patch for its GeForce line of graphics processing units (GPUs) is causing errors for a number of people, according to complaints on forums and social media. Nvidia just released the update in preparation for tomorrow’s launch of The Division military shooter, but some people who installed it today are now getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 when they boot up their machines. This is preventing the affected people from getting into their PCs.

Nvidia has acknowledged the problem on its customer forums, and it has provided the following statement:

“Initial investigation suggests the issue is isolated to multiple-monitor configurations. Should you experience issues, you can either disconnect one monitor during the driver installation (and reconnect once completed) or you can uninstall the driver through Windows Safe-Mode and revert to a previous version.

Our driver team is actively investigating the issue, and we will have more information shortly.”

Some affected GeForce owners were previously claiming that multiple monitors are the source of the troubles, and now Nvidia has confirmed that is an issue.

If you are wondering how to go through the safe-mode process, here’s a few quick instructions:

• Boot into safe mode by pressing F8 while starting up your Windows PC.
• Download the Display Driver Uninstaller utility.
• Use DDU to scrub the Nvidia update.
• DDU should then reboot your system in a working state.
