Product Hunt has released a new app that lets you keep track of what’s trending on the site, right from your desktop. Now available for Macs and open-sourced on GitHub, it will display the latest apps, books, games, and podcasts — and if you’re interested in viewing more, just click the “P” icon to be taken to the site.

Ryan Hoover, the company’s founder and CEO, explained that Product Hunt’s Mac app is a simplified version of what appears on the mobile and web apps. “It’s designed to give users a single feed of what’s hot on Product Hunt,” he said. It displays a counter on the desktop’s menu bar and also provides notifications when something new is added to the site. The spareness of features was the result of feedback the company received from early users.

When you click on an item within the desktop app, it will open in a new browser window. There you can upvote it or leave a comment. You can also share a hunted app, book, game, or podcast on Twitter or Facebook through Product Hunt’s desktop app.

Currently there are no plans to bring Product Hunt for Mac to Windows or Chromebook devices. The company has, however, placed the code for the app on GitHub, open-sourcing it to allow other developers to improve its functionality. You can download the Mac app here.
