Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is an original mobile RPG that’s coming to the West

Forget about remakes: The next Final Fantasy game you’ll play on your phone is a bit more ambitious.

Square Enix and Gumi announced today that Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is coming to the West this summer. The free-to-play role-playing game has already earned six million players in Japan. The mobile industry was worth $34.8 billion in 2015, according to market research firm Newzoo. The Final Fantasy series has sold over 110 million games, but its mobile reach is still small compared to popular Japanese hits like Puzzle and Dragons.

We’ve seen Final Fantasy on mobile before, with original games that feature multiple characters from across the franchise like Record Keeper and All the Bravest and ports of classics like Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IX. However, Brave Exvius is a new role-playing game with an original cast.

“Adventurers will follow two knights of the kingdom of Grandshelt, and a young girl who suddenly appears before them, as they begin their quest to pursue a highly sought after crystal,” a press release from Square Enix notes. “Players will make their way through various types of dungeons to search for items, collect gil, uncover hidden paths, and venture new routes.”

However, Square Enix did note that familiar Final Fantasy faces, like fan-favorites black mage Vivi from Final Fantasy IX and dark knight/paladin Cecil from Final Fantasy IV, will appear in Brave Exvius.
