PlayStation 4’s 4.00 update: HDR, Pro support, and more

Sony wants to improve your gaming experience.

PlayStation 4 will get its 4.00 software patch tomorrow, according to the PlayStation Blog. This update will introduce a number of new features for existing PS4s as well as support for the recently announced PlayStation 4 Pro, which launches November 10. One of the biggest features coming in this update is high-dynamic range (HDR), which enables every PS4 to more accurately reproduce colors and light levels on capable displays.

This patch is the latest in Sony’s updates for its flagship console. The company takes its time with major additions and bundles them together in massive upgrades like this one to ensure that it is keeping its console packed with reliable and exciting features.

HDR

• New HDR setting in the Video Output Settings

PlayStation 4 Pro support

• 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and Xperia devices
• 1080p streaming with Share Play
• 1080p 30/60fps livestreaming to YouTube
• 1080p 30fps on Twitch
• Support to easily transfer data to a new PS4, like a Pro

Updated user interface

• New system backgrounds
• More information on What’s New tab

Overhauled Quick Menu

• Quick Menu boots up faster
• It now only covers a portion of the screen, so you won’t have to leave your game
• New Quick Menu shortcuts to get to your friends, your Party, and more
• You can now also control music from the Quick Menu
• You can customize the Quick Menu to remove and add options

Share menu

• Share menu only covers a portion of the screen
• It will remember your preferred social network for sharing
• You can upload video clips up to 140 seconds on Twitter

Library

• You can now use folders
• New tab shows only “Purchased” games

Trophies

• You can view Trophies while offline
• Hidden Trophy data is now visible if you opt-in
• New icons for rarity

User profiles

• New look
• Relevant data is more visible
• New background images
