Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to make a movie based on Gears of War.

Rod Fergusson, head of Gears of War developer The Coalition, announced during a game livestream that Universal Pictures has optioned motion picture rights to Microsoft Studios’ Gears of War game series, which has more than $1 billion and has been played by more than 45 million gamers.

Scott Stuber (Ted series, Central Intelligence) and Dylan Clark (Planet of the Apes series, Oblivion) will produce for their Universal-based Bluegrass Films. In addition, Jon Mone, executive vice president of production, will oversee the project for Universal and Jay Ireland, senior vice president, will oversee for Bluegrass.

Microsoft acquired the Gears of War series from Epic Games in 2014 and co-creator Rod Fergusson returned to lead The Coalition, the Microsoft development studio focused exclusively on Gears of War. The series has had more than 3 million players since 2015, and Gears of War 4 launches on October 11 on the Xbox One and Windows 10.
