Prisma for iOS now lets you tweak videos up to 15 seconds long

The popular Prisma app, best known for photo editing, has started to roll out the ability to create 15-second videos, Prisma Labs announced today.

The ability to lay Prisma’s neural network-altered styles on top of 15-second videos is limited to iOS app users for now. Prisma video for Android users will become available in the coming weeks.

Prisma is one of several applications that use neural networks to alter images or video set in a particular style, so any photo can look like it was painted by a Renaissance master or Picasso.

The Prisma video editor beta is limited to nine styles like Candy, Cold Fish, Paper Art, and Tokyo, but will later be extended to all styles, the company said in a statement shared with VentureBeat.

“The processing time as well as the resolution depends on the device. It takes 30 secs to run a 15-sec video on iPhone 7, 55-60 seconds on iPhone 6s, and 2 minutes on iPhone 6,” the statement said. “The team is working hard on Android version to bring offline processing and videos in a couple of weeks.”

Since its launch in June, Prisma has been downloaded more than 70 million times, the company said.

Perhaps Prisma’s main competitor is Artisto, an app from Russian tech giant Mail.ru Group, a partial owner of Prisma. Artisto creates photos and 10-second videos. First available in late July, by at least in one measure, Artisto appears to have surpassed Prisma in popularity: At the time this story was published, Artisto was ranked 10th among top free apps in the iOS App Store, while Prisma was ranked 118th.

In August, Prisma became available offline for iOS users through the use of neural networks.

The Prisma app now has more than 30 styles available to apply filters to photos, some sponsored by brands. This summer, Prisma launched its first charity filter.
