Minecraft is launching on Apple TV this year

Minecraft creators have yet another platform to work with.

Apple revealed today that Microsoft’s phenomenally popular block-building survival game Minecraft is coming to the Apple TV device before the end of 2016. The app will enable cross-platform play between the mobile versions of Minecraft on iOS, Android, and Windows 10. Developer Mojang launched Minecraft in an unfinished alpha form in 2009. Since then, the studio has sold more than 100 million copies of the game and Microsoft purchased the property for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Now that Minecraft is on Apple TV, it’s nearly impossible to find a major platform that does not have its own version of the game. Mojang originally released it for PC before porting it to iOS, Android, Xbox 360, and then every other video game console since.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo tradeshow in June, Microsoft revealed its plans to unify the Minecraft experience across each device through Xbox Live. And by getting Minecraft on AppleTV, that’s one more place where Microsoft can start getting consumers into its account ecosystem.
