When it comes to consumer electronics, most people search Google for smartphones — but video game consoles are right behind them. And Nintendo is leading that pack.
Nintendo’s upcoming Switch hybrid home/handheld console was the most Googled video game console in 2016, according to the internet-search giant. Switch is coming out in March, and Nintendo only just revealed it with a trailer in October. But it generated much more excitement than the PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One S — although, Google doesn’t bundle the various models of each system (PS4 and PS4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One S) for this list.
But it wasn’t just the Switch that did well for Nintendo. The No. 2 most Googled gaming system was also one of its own: The NES Classic Edition. That’s the hot holiday item that looks like the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System and comes bundled with 30 of that system’s games.
Heading into 2017, Nintendo clearly has momentum. It could turn that into something big when it launches the Switch in March.
