Photo editing app and SDK maker Aviary today announced a major update to its standalone iOS and Android apps, introducing Creative Cloud-powered syncing; visual effects like highlights, shadows, overlays, and vignettes; and a “re-built” brush tool.

Aviary calls today’s update its “first significant release” since Adobe acquired the company in September.

At first glance, the new visual effects should help Aviary’s editor bulk up on functionality, but the Creative Cloud syncing feature seems a bit limited; it just lets users sync the visual effects they buy via in-app purchases and does not extend to the photos users edit inside the app.

Overall, today’s updates are small, but they show how Adobe’s influence may transform Aviary into a more sophisticated photo editing utility over time. Aviary cautions that “this is just the beginning,” saying “over time, we’ll be introducing even more creative features from inside our cozy new home at Adobe.”
