Knights in the Nightmare, my favorite little DS game from last year, was overlooked by the majority of the games press. Without the marketing and prestige of larger companies, the game had little chance to become a million-seller. It also didn’t help that its release date was a little too close to E3 for it to get any amount of recognition.
However, now may be your chance to redeem yourself, humble gamer (as well as Sting/Atlus to redeem possible losses). Knights in the Nightmare is scheduled for release on the PSP in Japan on April 22nd (via Famitsu through Siliconera), and it’ll likely be headed to the U.S. at some point.
This may be great news for people who missed out on the game when it came out on the DS back in June of last year, but the issue of control faces the port. Unlike Chinatown Wars, which only faced some minor control issues regarding small tasks like the assembly of a sniper rifle, Knights in the Nightmare is built specifically with the DS in mind.
Control of the game was almost exclusive to the touch screen, and the sort of movements required to dodge some of the attacks in the game could only be accomplished by something as fast as sliding the stylus across the screen. The PSP’s analog stick will likely be responsible for movement, but how well will it transfer? Likely with a slower pace.
On the other hand, it’s possible that one of the game’s biggest problems — the clutter of screen, which at times made it difficult to select your units — could be rectified on the PSP, which has a much wider screen. For a quick comparison of what the game will look like, check out the screen shot comparison over at Siliconera.
Will the PSP version of Knights in the Nightmare be the definitive one? It’s difficult to say, but I’ll probably review that version when it comes out in The States, like I did the other version.
