Google is making creating immersive storytelling at work easier by launching Google Vids, an AI-powered app that blends video creation with real-time collaboration. With its all-in-one suite of features, you can write, produce and edit clips and transform existing assets into creative videos through your browser. Google Vids is expected to be released to Workspace Labs in June.
There is no shortage of AI video generation tools currently on the market, from Augie and Descript to Haiper, Invideo AI, Runway, Visla, Opus Clip and DeepBrain AI. But Google’s foray into the space offers convenience. You don’t need to buy another app and invest time in learning how it works. Plus, Vids natively integrates with Google’s Docs, Slides and Sheets.
In a blog post, Google’s Vice President and General Manager for Google Workspace Aparna Pappu writes Vids “can generate a storyboard that you can easily edit, and after choosing a style, it pieces together your first draft with suggested scenes from stock videos, images, and background music.”
When starting a project, you can generate a first draft using one of the templates or the “help me create” feature. Google Vids will generate a storyboard. You can then set the video style, the script, and a voiceover — use a preset or your voice, in which case Vids’ recording studio feature includes a teleprompter.

Everything is done within the browser, something Pappu made a point of emphasizing during a press briefing ahead of the Google Next conference. “There is no need to email files back and forth. You and your team can continue on the story at the same time with all the same access controls and security that we provide for all of Workspace. Customers can now create everything from product pitches to training content, celebratory team videos and much more.”
This is all done through Google Gemini. You can insert a voiceover into your movie, whether it’s your voice or one of Google’s presets. When complete, prompt the AI to share the project with your colleagues, and Gemini will handle the rest.

The introduction of Google Vids puts Google on a collision course with Adobe and other video software providers. Its appeal may be the equivalent of using Snapseed for photo editing versus Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. Vids does not eliminate the need to use more powerful solutions in video creation, such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
When released in June, Google Vids will be available only to paying customers. It will be accessible in the same menu area as the rest of the Google Workspace apps, alongside Docs, Sheets and Slides.
Pappu didn’t rule out releasing a consumer version sometime in the future but said the goal is to garner feedback first. “This product is very much designed to help tell stories in your work environment. That is where our priority is once we roll those features out to our paying customers. Let’s see what the response is and go from there.”
