This is more of a rant if anything, but the current state of Capcom makes me question their marketing choices lately. Sifting through my SNES collection, I've noticed that a strong majority of the games I own are developed or published by the Osaka based company.
With the current state of the video game industry leaning towards digital distribution, it makes me wonder why Capcom abuses the system of downloadable content. Oftentimes, exploiters have found a way to unlock content within the disc itself; and by word-of-mouth, fans have turned their backs on Capcom.
In Capcom's defense, Yoshinori Ono, the executive producer stated that the reason for the on-disc DLC was to discourage big downloads and to make compatibility during online matches more streamlined.
But that doesn't explain the fact that over 12 characters are sitting comfortably within the confines of my disc.
I do understand the fact that adding characters to a roster typically requires technical fixes and balancing issues between characters, but it just seems unfair to me as a customer and long time fan of the company. I feel cheated out of my money. Not only do I have to pay 60 dollars for a retail copy, but I'd have to fork over more to get costumes and characters. Of course, I can opt out of purchasing Ken's stupid alternate cowboy costume.
What happened to the days of simply unlocking a character by doing some sort of daunting task? If Capcom has been doing this since Street Fighter IV, then why hasn't Capcom paid attention to the cries of their fans? Instead, they continue to twist our wrists and demand an entrance fee for their complete game. It's a passive-aggressive take on DLC, and I think I've had enough of it. There's a fine-line between bonus content and "paid patches."
Looks like I'll never defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.
