BloodRayne: Betrayal and Ninja Gaiden 3 are pretty juicy. I’m used to video-game violence, but I still have moments where I think “ugh” while I chuckle silently to myself. I was expecting to see titles that stood out as particularly gory; although, I didn’t think I would see them within my first few hours at E3. If you like seeing your enemies as piles of meaty chunks, you probably want to check these out.


Yep, this is what comes to mind when I think of a teen-rated game.
 

BloodRayne: Betrayal

It’s no surprise that a game about vampires has a fair amount of blood, right? So then, is it shocking to hear that BloodRayne: Betrayal received a teen rating? Check out some footage of the game, and I guarantee that you’ll think to yourself, “Wait, what?”

Players will spill buckets of blood (emphasis on buckets) as they separate enemy vampires into pieces. Your infectious bite can turn adversaries into remotely detonated bombs; the result is quite impressive…and messy.

But would you like to know developer WayForward’s explanation for the teen rating? “The style is cartoonish,” they said. I guess the ESRB assumes anything animated by hand is drawn in crayon.

 


I didn't manage to pull this move off, but I wish I had.
 

Ninja Gaiden 3

If you’re familiar with this series, you’re no stranger to turning your foes into minced meat. Ninja Gaiden 3 is focusing a little more attention on the art of slicing and dicing, and it shows.

Director Yasuda Fumihiko stated that the team wanted to study the concept of “what cutting a man is,” and from what I saw of Ryu Hayabusa’s blade work, the boys at Team Ninja did their homework. By the end of a fight, you'll soak both you and the floor in everyone else’s blood.

One particular conflict made me groan sympathetically: a lone, poor soldier crawled across the floor, bathed in his own blood, and screamed in agony. And then I “put him out of his misery.” What can I say? I’m a sympathetic guy.
