Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I buy a lot more games than I actually have time to play. So while I picked up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection during the holidays, I’m currently still hooked on Fallout: New Vegas.

We all get a backlog of games for one of the following reasons:
* Work
* School
* Personal stuff
* Give up and say “fuck it”

I usually declare “fuck it” when I completely lose any interest in the game due to what I perceive as dull gameplay or annoying, repetitive action.

Sure, I could go through my backlog and try to finish them, but with so many other games coming out soon and obligations in my life, it's so much easier just to say “fuck it.” So here is a list of games I bought last year that I ended up saying “fuck it” to.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (only finished it once) – This nearly counted as a gaming accomplishment. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an RPG that allows gamers to achieve their objectives multiple ways with different outcomes based on various choices.

However, Deus Ex: Human Revolution failed to have the same combat experience that the first one had. The original game offered players a variety of weapons to use (firearms, melee, non-lethal, etc.), while Human Revolution is more limited. Hence, half the time I’m just ducking and hoping for a headshot.

Nothing annoyed me more than how slow you leveled up. You have to work your way up, and the process is so slow that you fail to acquire the necessary skills when they are most needed.

After finishing the game once, I had no real desire to go back and replay it just to see the path not taken.

Dead Island – How does a game take the fun out of a zombie apocalypse? In theory, Dead Island should have been non-stop fun — killing waves of zombies in an open-world environment while progressing in RPG fashion. It had all the right gameplay aspects and yet I said "fuck it" after three months.

Why?

It comes down to two main reasons. The first is how slow the game progressed. It was similar to Deus Ex: Human Revolution in that regard.

Dead Island

The second was all about the gameplay. The combat was very slow-paced and offered nothing but the same annoying, repetitive act of bashing zombies. Making matters worse, you will die a lot and re-spawn more times than you should, exacerbating your frustration.

Battlefield 3 (Single-player only) – Basically, the single-player campaign was just a copy of Call of Duty at a very slow pace. In the never-ending rivalry between EA and Activision over the war-shooter genre, Battlefield 3 attempted to copy the success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, only to forget the part about making it interesting.

Battlefield 3

EA failed miserably to notice that a first-person shooter ought to be fast-paced. Instead of an intense FPS that puts Michael Bay to shame, Battlefield 3 ended up becoming a game so slow that the real challenge was staying awake. (I literally had moments where I dozed off behind the controller.)

In the end, Battlefield 3's single-player campaign did the unthinkable of making war boring. Hence, I had to say “fuck it" two days before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was released.
