AMD CEO Lisa Su appears to have revealed a much more specific launch timeframe for Windows 10. If the executive is correct, Microsoft will debut Windows 8’s successor in just three months.

During an earnings call last week, Su stated the following:

What we also are factoring in is, you know, with the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we are watching sort of the impact of that on the back-to-school season, and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up.

We’ve heard July rumored as the Windows 10 launch month before, though not by any accurate sources. Given that AMD is developing Windows 10 hardware, it follows the company is privy to Microsoft’s plans.

The latest official word from Microsoft is that Windows 10 will launch “this summer” in 190 countries and 111 languages. July falls into this timeframe, so it’s quite plausible, as far as timelines go.

That said, Su may have been referring to when OEMs first get their hands on Windows 10. Microsoft’s operating systems typically hit release to manufacturing (RTM) status, meaning computer makers can start preloading the operating system on their PCs before consumers can buy them in stores.

Furthermore, Windows 10 might not arrive for PCs at the same time as for phones. Based on the quote, Su was clearly referring to Windows 10 for PCs.

Of course, Windows 10 is not a typical Windows release, and all of this is speculation. Microsoft may indeed release its latest and greatest to everyone by the end of July. We should keep in mind, however, that the company could easily push the date back — if it is aiming for “the end of July,” there is breathing room because its official stance is “this summer.”

If Microsoft doesn’t experience any delays, we could learn the Windows 10 launch date at its Build conference next week.
