Android 5.0 Lollipop now rolling out to second-generation Moto X Pure Edition and Moto G, ‘most’ Nexus devices

Motorola today announced it has started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to some of its devices. The first lucky three to get the update are the second-generation Moto X Pure Edition, the Moto G US GSM, and the Moto G Global GSM retail version sold in the U.S.

Many reports had Motorola pushing Lollipop out to some of its devices before the update arrives on Google’s Nexus devices. Now it’s official.

Update: Google has joined the party with its Nexus line. The company says Android 5.0 Lollipop will roll out to “most Nexus devices in the coming weeks.” Even though a full list wasn’t shared, we’ve seen reports confirming the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 are all included. No mention of the Nexus 4 yet.

The really significant news here, however, is that despite Google selling Motorola to Lenovo, the phone company is still pushing Android updates in a very timely fashion (“just a week after the public release” in the case of Android 5.0). Under Google’s ownership, Motorola built a reputation of quickly releasing Android updates for its devices. So far, that hasn’t changed, and that’s something current and future device owners will remember.

Here are the five features Motorola chose to highlight from Android 5.0:

• A new look and feel. Google brings its all-new Material Design to life with a bold new visual style. The new user interface is designed to enable more natural touch screen interactions and introduces vivid new colors, typography, and edge-to-edge imagery to make using your phone more fluid.
• Your device, your rules. Catch up with notifications on your lock screen and even dismiss them without unlocking. The new Downtime and Interruption settings also allow you to decide which people and what notifications get through at times that you choose.
• Share your device. You know that moment when your kid plays with your phone or a friend needs to borrow it? Use Guest mode or another account you’ve set up to share your device. You can also pin a view to limit the user to a particular application.
• Let there be light. To turn on the new flashlight in Quick Settings, just swipe down with two fingers from the status bar.
• Battery saver. The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection of how much operating time you have left, even while you’re charging. You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will reduce performance and most background operations to extend your battery life.
