Apple CEO Tim Cook

The most valuable company in the world, Apple, will announce its third quarter earnings for 2012 on Tuesday, July 24. The call will take place at 2pm Pacific time, likely with Apple chief executive Tim Cook and chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer in attendance.

Apple’s earnings have remained impressive. During its second quarter earnings call, the company announced it had taken on a record $11.6 billion in profit, probably in part due to launching the latest iPad within that quarter. Overall revenue was $39.2 billion, with cash reserves up to $110 billion. In terms of sales, Apple saw growth in almost all areas but the iPod. iPhone sales were up 88 percent over the year-ago quarter at 35.1 million units sold, iPads up 151 percent at 11.8 million units sold, and Mac sales up seven percent at four million units sold.

The company also made a number of product announcements at its annual WWDC developer conference this past June. This included a new line of 15-inch MacBook Pro computers outfitted with Retina displays — the same screen update the iPad received in Apple’s Q2. The company also announced its latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, which will come with a new, home-grown maps application, replacing Google Maps. The OS will be released some time next fall, but don’t expect the date to be announced on the 24th.

9to5Mac does make the good point, though, that during last year’s third quarter earnings call Apple executives announced that OS X Lion would be released the following day. Mountain Lion, Lion’s successor is slated to come out “this summer,” so the timing is right for Apple to surprise investors again on the earnings call. Nothing, of course, is guaranteed.
