Apple releases iOS 10 public beta 3

Apple today rolled out the third public beta for iOS 10, the next version of its operating system for iPhone, iPad, and the iPod Touch.

Today’s release comes two weeks after the second public beta. Apple first unveiled iOS 10 at its WWDC conference in June.

In iOS 10 Apple has redesigned Apple Maps, Apple Music, Apple News, and Messages, and it has added a Home app for controlling internet-connected devices, among other things.

To get the updated public beta, you can open up Settings, hit Software Update, and hit Download and Install. To install, you’ll need to have your iOS device connected to a power source or have at least 50 percent battery life. You’ll need to be part of the Apple Beta Software Program.

But you don’t need to install the betas if you don’t want to. The final version of iOS 10 will become available to everyone in the fall, when the company is expected to show off new iPhones, and perhaps other devices, too.

Update at 10:12 a.m. Pacific: Apple has also rolled out public beta 3 for macOS Sierra, two weeks after public beta 2 came out for that operating system, which is the successor to OS X. If you’re already enrolled in the beta program, just visit the Updates tab in the Mac App Store, and the update should be there.
