Apple releases new iOS 9, OS El Capitan, and Watch OS updates to developers

Apple released a trio of substantive updates to its El Capitan, Watch OS, and iOS 9 operating systems to developers today.

The (second) OS El Capitan update reportedly includes the addition of a split-screen mode for some core applications, an upgraded Mission Control view, and a new Notes app. The update also includes a number of under-the-hood stability features.

The El Capitan OS, which we reviewed here, will go into public beta testing in July before finally being released to the public in the fall.

The iOS 9 developer preview included such things as a new slide-out menu screen to the left side of the primary home screen, a redesigned app-switching interface, new features to the Maps app, and an improved Notes app.

Finally, the Watch OS shows some new tricks to developers today. In the second developer beta, the OS continues to build on features that give developers tools to build native apps that run on the processor in the Watch. It also provides developers the ability to access key Watch features like the digital crown, microphone, speaker, and heart rate monitor.

It also adds some consumer-facing features, like the new “night stand” clock mode announced earlier this month, three new watch faces, new details for custom watch faces, and a better music app.
