Apple's HealthKit collaborator, Mayo Clinic, launches its iOS 8-integrated app

Mayo Clinic was one of the first big-name health providers Apple tapped to help with the build and launch of the HealthKit consumer health data platform.

Now Mayo has launched its app, which is available for free to Mayo Clinic patients and the general public at Apple’s App Store.

The Mayo app now collects data from any number of connected health devices through an integration with the Health app in iOS 8. The HealthKit platform sits above it all and controls which pieces of data in the Health app the Mayo app can access.

Mayo Clinic says the app provides users a clear and current overview of their health and fitness data. App users have full control of their personal health information and can decide what, if any, data is stored in the Apple Health app. The new app will replace the current Mayo Clinic patient app.

“Users of the new Mayo Clinic app will have easier access to health information, guidance, and care when they need it most,” says Mayo’s medical director of public affairs John Wald, M.D. “Through the Apple Health app, users will be able to integrate information from other apps with their Mayo Clinic health information, creating actionable data to improve health and wellness.”

The app allows users to:

• View Mayo Clinic health data through the Apple Health dashboard
• Contact their care team directly through secure messaging
• View and manage details of their appointment schedule
• View Mayo Clinic videos on their iPhone, iPod, and iPad

Future updates to the app will include disease and condition management, and personalized feedback tailored for users. Mayo Clinic will continue to support and update the Mayo Clinic app on Android platforms.
