WordPress.com parent company Automattic today announced the acquisition of BruteProtect, a plugin that protects WordPress users from malicious logins.

Going forward, Automattic says it will integrate BruteProtect’s technology directly into the Jetpack plugin. For context, Automattic’s Jetpack plugin integrates WordPress.com features into self-hosted WordPress.org installs.

BruteProtect will shut down “over the coming months,” according to a blog post from WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg.

The integration won’t drive revenue for Automattic — the Jetpack plugin is a free download — but securing WordPress sites will help keep the platform’s rapid growth on track.
