Backflip Studios announced today that its mobile games have been downloaded more than 100 million times in the past two years.
Only a few companies can make that assertion. Rovio said its Angry Birds game has been downloaded more than 200 million times. And Outfit7 says its Talking Friends iPhone apps have also been downloaded more than 100 million times. So 100 million downloads is a pretty heady numbers for a small company like Backflip, which operates a game development studio in Boulder, Colo.
The company’s most popular titles by volume are Paper Toss, Ninjump, Paper Toss: World Tour, Strike Knight, and Ragdoll Blaster 2. Roughly 80 percent of the games are distributed on iOS (iPhone) devices and 20 percent on Android. Backflip is seeing around 25 million monthly active users and 2.5 million daily active users across its whole network of games, which are cross-promoted.
The numbers include both free and paid downloads. A third of the company’s revenue comes from App Store sales, a third is from mobile advertising, and a third is from in-app purchases (such as virtual goods purchases).
Revenue and user growth continues to grow to be about double or triple from a year ago. More than 25 of the company’s titles have been ranked in the top 20 or better in the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace. The free games generate more than a billion impressions a month. And this summer, the company is launching a bunch of games for free, including Strike Knight HD on the iPad starting June 2, followed by other free summer titles including Shape Shift, Backflip Solitaire and Boss Battles. Last year, the company saw huge success with its Summer of Free promotion, said Julian Farrior, chief executive of Backflip.
Strike Knight saw more than 10 million downloads on the iPhone, and the HD version will now debut on the iPad. A paid version of Ragdoll Blaster 3 is in the works and scheduled for launch in September. Backflip Games is self-funded and has 23 employees.
