Box said today that it’s acquiring MedXT, a startup that developed technology to host and display medical images from a cloud.

Clinical images are a core part of patient diagnostics, and the expertise of the MedXT team members and their medical image viewing technology will be incredibly important in our effort to deliver HIPAA-compliant sharing and collaboration for all critical content types,” Box chief executive Aaron Levie wrote in a blog post on the news. “Together with MedXT, we will pursue the vision for a healthcare system where physicians have instant access to critical medical procedures and data from tablets; patients can obtain their personal medical records and information without friction; and institutions can securely share healthcare outcomes and data across organizations, securely.”

Box has focused on health care as a primary industry in its push to get into big businesses, and now that strategy is more strongly influencing its acquisition behavior.

(Levie will be discussing Box’s growing role in healthcare at VentureBeat’s HealthBeat conference October 27-28.)

“Your data and your account will remain accessible and we will work closely with you to provide more details in the next coming weeks,” MedXT said on its homepage.

San Francisco-based MedXT started in 2012 and participated in Y Combinator in winter 2013. Reshma Khilnani and Cody Ebberson are joining Box’s engineering team, according to Levie’s blog post.
