City boy/girl: FlightCar will now pay you $400 per month to park at the airport

Airport-centric carshare service FlightCar is now shelling out up to $400 per car per month for its members to park their cars at the airport (the airport parking is free of charge).

FlightCar says it’ll even take rented cars for the program, called FlightCar Monthly.

FlightCar’s overall service is meant to tackle two problems at once. First, there’s the issue of city parking. It’s expensive and often difficult or impossible to find. Second, there’s ridesharing services, which require you to finagle moving dots on a map on your smartphone and/or share breathing space with a total stranger.

For long-term urban-dwellers who only use their cars on weekends or extraordinary occasions, as well as for plane-weary travelers, the solution is both easy and financially sensible.

For FlightCar Monthly, which is in beta as of today, car owners don’t need to pay any membership or other fees. FlightCar simply picks up your car and hands you a check for a variable amount based on the make and model. Here’s the skinny:

In return for agreeing to let FlightCar try to rent their car for at least 26 out of a 30-day period, car owners will automatically receive a check between $150 to $400 each month, depending on the make and model year. Customers will also enjoy added conveniences such as free vehicle pickup, monthly auto-renewal, $1 million in insurance, town car service, and a car wash. FlightCar Monthly customers can also use their car, or an equivalent one, for free anytime for up to four days a month..

Cambridge, Mass.-based FlightCar took a $5.5 million round of funding earlier this year. This was the startup’s first institutional round and was led by General Catalyst with participation from Softbank Capital, Ryan Seacrest’s Seacrest Global Group, Airbnb founder Brian Chesky, First Round Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
