Praising the sun is going to look a lot silkier on PC.
Developer From Software has confirmed that Dark Souls III will run at 60 frames per second on Windows at launch. The studio took to Twitter to confirm the game will use that refresh rate, which many gamers consider important for creating a smooth-looking moving image. This is big news for From because the developer previously locked the original Dark Souls game at 30 FPS on PC back in 2012. It then launched Dark Souls II in 2014 with a similar cap on the frame rate. From Software eventually patched in support for 60hz, but that introduced a number of other issues where players weapons would degrade at twice the rate of the standard game. This has given the developer a poor reputation among PC players because many fans find it insulting when a developer forces a game to run at 30hz. Most people who play on Windows treasure having the options to configure their software however they want, and they resent a studio limiting them to what they perceive as the least-common denominator of the consoles.

It is the latest entry in a series that is known for its diabolical difficulty. The games have steadily built up an audience by focusing on challenge and making people feel accomplished for overcoming those obstacles.

But while Dark Souls III is getting that buttery 60 FPS on PC, console gamers are left out. From Software has previously confirmed that both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will stick to 30 FPS for Dark Souls III. That makes the PC release the best version of the three in terms of visuals. The Windows release will likely also get a lot of support from the community, which actually produced a mod that enabled gamers to play the original Dark Souls at 60 frames per second back in 2012.
