Verdasys, a security firm that specializes in endpoint data protection, has raised $12 million from Brookline Ventures. In an interesting move, the startup is naming that fund’s cofounding partner, Kenneth Levine, as its new chief executive.
Verdasys’ new CEO formerly led NitroSecurity, a developer of security tools that McAfee acquired in 2011. Later, Levine served as senior vice president and general manager at McAfee. The 11-year-old company was previously led by Jim Ricotta, a former Cisco and IBM executive.

The company claims it recently aided the FBI in catching “two Chinese nationals stealing trade secrets at Dupont and Valspar paint.” The firm also claims it “once caught a thief stealing drawings for the next Ferrari.”
Verdasys’ plans for its new capital, however, are predictably vague; the security firm’s official release claims it will expand into new markets, and explore new partnership opportunities. The company has now pulled in a total of $65 million in funding to date.
