In the last few years, the medical technology industry (aka “med tech”), which makes clinical-grade monitoring devices and the like, has been feeling a significant impact from digital health innovations, the kind that comes from companies and startups born out of a consumer tech world. In fact, last year, venture funding in digital health outpaced funding for traditional medical devices.
According to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report last year, the medical technology field is in the midst of a sea change. Companies in the med-tech space are accustomed to spending heavily on years of research, while consumer tech companies — established companies and startups — are used to taking a very aggressive approach to innovation. That cultural difference can’t be understated.
Yet it’s critical to keep in mind that each sector has something to teach the other. The potential upsides for that trade of ideas will be discussed by HealthBeat presenters Lisa Suennen, managing partner, Venture Valkyrie; Brian Russell, founder and CEO of Zephyr Anywhere; and Stacy Enxing Seng, president of Covidien Vascular Therapies.
In the HealthBeat session, “Fireside Face-off: True vs. new age methods of bringing med-tech products to market,” you’ll learn how integrating both worlds will be vital to creating new technologies that better track the patient’s journey through the system.
Data-driven innovations aimed at providing real-time information about patient status, diagnoses, and therapeutic effectiveness need to integrate with traditional med-tech devices.
