Droid X2After months of speculation, Motorola and Verizon have confirmed the launch date for the Motorola Droid X2 smartphone. Priced at $200 with a new two-year plan, The Droid X2 will be available online May 19, and will hit Verizon Wireless stores May 26.

The phone is the successor to the very popular Droid X, which was launched in June 2010. As far as the technical specs go, the phone isn’t offering much in the way of surprises. The device does have a dual-core 1 GHz processor—a first for Verizon’s smartphone offerings—a 4.3-inch qHD display, 8 megapixel rear camera, and HD video recording capabilities.

The Droid X2 also has an HDMI out port, which lets users connect their phone to a HDTV for viewing videos and photos on a bigger screen. The phone is running Android 2.2 (codename “Froyo”) off the shelf, but will be updated to Android 2.3, or Gingerbread, later, on an unspecified date.

Connectivity is still 3G, because the Droid X2 is not running on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The phone does have Mobile Hotspot capability for sharing its 3G connection with up to five Wi-Fi -enabled devices. For a 4G LTE phone from Motorola, we still have to wait for the Droid Bionic, which is due out this summer and was delayed from its second quarter launch.
