Dropbox appoints new CTO, Aditya Agarwal, takes over for cofounder Arash Ferdowsi

Cloud file syncing and sharing software company Dropbox today announced that it has appointed Aditya Agarwal as its new chief technology officer. Agarwal is taking the place of Arash Ferdowsi, who founded Dropbox in 2007 with CEO Drew Houston.

Agarwal arrived at Dropbox in 2012 when Dropbox acquired Cove, at which he was cofounder and chief technology officer. That was Dropbox’s first acquisition; at the time reports suggested that Dropbox had done the deal in order to appoint Agarwal as Dropbox’s chief technology officer. Now it’s officially happening.

Agarwal was an early engineer at Facebook and rose to the position of director of product engineering there. Since joining Dropbox he has worked on multiple products, including Dropbox Business, Dropbox Enterprise, and Dropbox Paper, according to a blog post today from Ferdowsi and Houston. Until today Agarwal’s title was vice president of engineering.

As for Ferdowsi, he will “continue to focus his day-to-day activities on helping Dropbox scale as a company and business,” the cofounders wrote.

Agarwal’s wife is Ruchi Sanghvi, another early Facebook employee who cofounded Cove along with Agarwal and later was vice president of operations at Dropbox. She left the company in 2014, according to LinkedIn.

Today’s appointment comes two months after Dropbox named a new chief financial officer.
