Evernote is killing Skitch for Android, iOS, and Windows on January 22, but not Mac

Note-taking app company Evernote today delivered some sad news for users of the image annotation app Skitch. The iOS, Android, and Windows versions of Skitch will be going away on January 22. The Mac version will continue to be available.

In addition to the Skitch purge, Evernote is killing off its Clearly browser extension for distraction-free reading that first showed up in 2011, and the company is also removing its core app for Pebble smartwatches on January 22.

“We’ve incorporated many of the best features of Skitch and Clearly in our core applications,” Evernote vice president of desktop products Jack Hirsch wrote in the blog post announcing the news. “Skitch users will find nearly identical annotation functionality in the Evernote Windows and iOS apps. And the article simplification features from Clearly are available in our Web Clipper. People with Pebble watches can find similar Evernote features with the Powernoter app.”

Evernote first acquired Skitch in 2011. As of May 2014, the standalone Skitch app had 16 million users.

Evernote has done a few things that don’t bode well for the company, as of late. It has discontinued Evernote Food, and it has also backpedaled on unlimited storage for premium users of the main Evernote app.

Plus, cofounder and CEO Phil Libin stepped down, and the company laid off 47 employees earlier this year.

But. There is some potential upside to the consolidation in apps and platforms.

“We’ve got big plans for 2016 and beyond, and our goal is very straightforward: make Evernote better than ever,” Hirsch wrote.
