Lightspeed raises $61M to expand its point of sale to retailers and restaurants worldwide
As more mobile point-of-sale systems crowd the field, Montreal-based Lightspeed just snagged $61 million in funding to grow adoption of its platform among mid-market retailers and restaurants worldwide.
Though Lightspeed’s restaurant software may be ahead of the game, the company still has a lot of catching up to do. Square, which is available in 130 countries, boasts 100,000 merchants, and PayPal has 10 million merchants globally. There are also still a large number of merchants around the world who use legacy systems like First Data to process transactions. Suffice it to say, Lightspeed has its work cut out for it.
Since its founding in 2005, Lightspeed has raised a total of $125 million in investor funding from iNovia Capital, Accel Partners, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, and Investissement Québec.

AWS Lambda competitor Iron.io raises $8M
Iron.io, a startup with “task processing’ software that can automatically do computational work in parallel or according to a specific schedule, is announcing today an $8 million round of funding.
The startup was founded back in 2010, but things have become more interesting in the past year with public cloud market leader Amazon Web Services announcing Lambda, a service that bears a resemblance to Iron.io’s core IronWorker software.
Baseline Ventures led the new round in Iron.io. Bain Capital Ventures, Cloud Capital Partners, Divergent Ventures, and Ignition Partners also participated. To date, the San Francisco startup has raised $13.5 million.
Envoy raises $3M for its on-demand senior care service and expands to San Antonio
As our lives get busier, who will take care of the elderly members of our family? If you’re a fan of the on-demand economy, then Envoy might be just the thing. It’s a family concierge service for seniors and family caregivers, and today it has launched in San Antonio, now making it available in 17 markets across 7 U.S. states.
To support this massive expansion and its operations, Envoy has also raised a $3 million seed round led by SoftTech VC.
Envoy is anything but an original idea as it has many competitors with similar services, including Santa Monica-based HomeHero, which has raised $23 million in funding; Honor, which has $20 million in its coffers; and Care.com, which also focuses on child care.
