Why does Magic Leap need another $827M?

Augmented reality startup Magic Leap is reportedly raising $827 million in a third round of funding, according to Forbes.

The third round of funding, if completed, would bring the company’s total investment to date to $1.4 billion, making it one of the best-funded startups in the world. We’ve also heard that Magic Leap is raising money, but don’t know more details. The company hasn’t commented yet, but Forbes cited a regulatory filing located by VC Experts.

Viral content publisher Dose Media raises $25M

Dose Media, the company behind viral content publications dose.com and OMGFacts.com, announced yesterday that it closed a $25 million series B financing. The round was led by Tribune Media and John Stafford’s Tayori.

The Chicago company, formerly known as Spartz Media, has raised at least $34.5M since its seed round in 2012.

DataScience snags $22 million round

Analytics startup DataScience announced today that it took in a $22 million investment. Whitehart Ventures led the series B round, bringing DataScience’s total funding to more than $28 million.

Indoor farming startup AeroFarms harvests $20 million investment

AeroFarms, a company that says it wants to “address the global food crisis by building and operating indoor farms,” announced today that it closed a $20 million funding round led by U.K.-based Wheatsheaf Group.

MissionPoint Capital and Middleland Capital also participated in the round. The startup said that it has been “working closely with Goldman Sachs and Prudential Financial to raise over $70 million” to help AeroFarms’ expansion.

Virtual reality gets a new $10M seed fund from FarmVille co-creator and HTC Vive founder

Serial entrepreneur Amitt Mahajan, the co-creator of FarmVille, believes that the best opportunity for game startups is at the beginning of a new platform. That’s why he has teamed up with former HTC executive Phil Chen and startup veteran Paul Bragiel to create Presence Capital, a seed fund to finance virtual reality and augmented reality games and apps.

TinyPulse takes in $6 million for product development

Employee engagement tool TinyPulse announced today that it raised $6 million for its series A round, led by Arthur Ventures.

The Seattle-based startup has raised $9.5 million to date, and said that it closes the year with a “100 percent-plus growth.”

Gradle raises $4.2M to commercialize its open source build automation software

Gradle, the startup behind the Gradle open source build automation software, is announcing today that it has taken on $4.2 million in funding. This is essentially the coming-out party for the startup, which has 35 employees.

True Ventures and Data Collective led the new round in Gradle.

The Gradle software project first appeared in 2008. Gradle the company started in 2011. It’s based in San Francisco, with many employees in Berlin.
