Demo: Make smarter shopping decisions with Get

Steven Fruchter

The new startup Get helps people make smarter shopping decisions by asking questions to a community of consumers. Essentially, its a Formspring.me for purchasing items you don’t know anything about.

Get founder (and former CEO of Stickam) Steven Fruchter said the service is for “anyone who has spent hours searching and reading review after review on Amazon or Google, trying to figure out which is the best product for their needs and budget.”

I can attest to the frustration of buying a decent point and shoot camera on short notice and having no one to turn to for advice. While both Facebook and Twitter produced results, it took well over a week to get some useful suggestions — and by that time I had already made a decision.

“This is a problem that personally bothered us enough to start a company dedicated to solving it,” Fruchter said. “It’s a huge and obvious piece that’s missing from the web today.”

Founded in 2011, the Santa Monica, California-based startup has $1 million seed funding from private investors. Get was co-founded by Fruchter and former Stickam CTO Jake Gold. They are currently the company’s sole employees. The service faces competition from Bestcovery and FindTheBest.

Get is one of 80 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Fall 2011 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After our selection, the companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.
