Google acquires PostRank, a social analytics service

PostRank logoSocial analytics company PostRank on Friday announced in a blog post that it had been acquired by Google. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are extremely excited to join Google,” PostRank CTO Ilya Grigorik wrote. “We believe there is simply no better company on the web today that both understands the value of the engagement data we have been focusing on, and has the platform and reach to bring its benefits to the untold millions of daily, active Internet users.”

The purchase shows just how serious Google is about improving its social initiatives. PostRank measures real-time web data and performance, with an emphasis on social stats like how many re-tweets or Facebook shares a piece of content gets. The company also helps businesses connect with influential users.

New signups for PostRank’s services have been suspended, but existing customers will still be serviced by the company, according to TechCruch.

A final note from PostRank’s blog post says the team will be relocating from Waterloo, Ontario to Google’s Mountain View, Calif. offices.

The acquisition comes only days after Google launched its +1 button for websites, which furthers the company’s social agenda by letting users share products, news articles, and more with friends, family, and associates.
