Google will start Fiber installs in Provo this year, beating Austin to the punch

When Provo, Utah was announced as Google’s third Google Fiber city in April, it was surprising because Google had just announced Austin, Texas, would get it only weeks before.

Now Google has confirmed that Provo will be the second city after Kansas City to get Google Fiber, with installations likely starting before the end of the year. Provo’s circumstances are a bit different than KC and Austin, however, because Google purchased an existing fiber network in Provo that just needs upgrading. That means deploying it will be easier in Provo than the other two cities.

Google’s current plan for Austin is to have people sign up for the service in early 2014 and then begin installations for its first customers by the middle of 2014.

As for Provo, Google says it will offer essentially the same plans as those offered in Kansas City’s Fiber customers. Prices are as follows:

• Free Internet: Get today’s basic broadband speeds (up to 5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload) for free for at least the next seven years.
• Gigabit Internet: Connect to the web at speeds up to 100 times faster than basic broadband (up to 1 Gbps download and upload) for $70/month.
• Gigabit Internet + TV: Get 100 times faster Internet plus hundreds of HD channels. Record up to eight shows at once and store up to 500 hours of HD content on your Storage Box for $120/month.

Provo residents will benefit from having more options available. Comcast reportedly has plans to slash prices on Internet, TV, and phone service bundles being offered in Provo.
