Google launches the Family Store, a Play Store section for kids and parents

Google today announced at its I/O developer conference a special place for children and parents in the Google Play Store. It’s called the Family Store.

You can drill down to apps by age — like apps for kids aged 9-12 and those for kids aged 6-8, as Google Play product manager Ellie Powers said onstage.

The move comes a month after the introduction of Google Play’s Designed for Families program. In that program, app developers can designate their apps as kid-friendly and worthy of an ESRB Everyone or Everyone 10+ rating, or an equivalent rating.

Apps that fit these parameters get a cute little star, Powers said.

The new section features plenty of new content, including Crayola DJ, Cutie Patootie, Thomas’s Musical Day for Percy, and Doozers-Play Along Stories, according to a blog post from Googler Eunice Kim that has more detail on the new program.
