Google mulls Fiber expansion to Tampa, Jacksonville, and Oklahoma City

Google is continuing to aggressively expand its fiber optic network to more cities around the U.S. Today, the company invited Tampa, Jacksonville, and Oklahoma City to join its Fiber service.

Now, the three new cities will have to decide whether they want to bring in Google’s “gigabit speed” fiber optic network. Once a city accepts the invitation, they have a long process ahead. Google will work with local officials to determine whether each city is capable of adding Google’s fiber optic network to its existing infrastructure before moving ahead with implementation.

Google has been moving quickly. It kicked off the year by launching in 18 cities and has since added a number of other locations to its list. Just last month the company added Irvine, Louisville, and San Diego to its potential Fiber cities. Already, Google has rolled out service to Provo, Utah; Kansas City, Missouri; and Austin, Texas, though other cities are in the works. It’s also made its high speed Internet service available to public housing residents in all Fiber regions.

So far there are 15 regions in total that are in Google’s pipeline.
