Google today announced that you can now visit any Blogspot domain — like, say, libraryh3lp.blogspot.com, for example — using HTTPS. And when you do that, your connection will be secure and encrypted. You’ll just need to change the beginning of the URL from “http://” to “https://”.

Previously Blogspot account holders had to turn on the HTTPS Availability option to make their pages accessible over HTTPS. No more — now it’s online that way by default.

Google is also going further and adding a new option, HTTPS Redirect, which automatically converts HTTP Web traffic to Blogspot pages over to the corresponding HTTPS pages.

“While all blogspot blogs will have an HTTPS version enabled, if you turn on this new setting, all visitors will be redirected to the HTTPS version of your blog at https://.blogspot.com even if they go to http://.blogspot.com,” Google security software engineer Milinda Perera wrote in a blog post. “If you choose to turn off this setting, visitors will have two options for viewing your blog: the unencrypted version at http://.blogspot.com or the encrypted version at https://.blogspot.com.”

Blogspot, of course, is a trusted entity of Google. Google took hold of them as a result of its 2003 acquisition of Pyra Labs, which operated the service Blogger. Google standardizes its own blogs on Blogspot pages, and naturally they’re now available via HTTPS as well.
