Google Street View heads inside Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world

Google Street View has been venturing ever further from the “streets” in recent times, covering everything from the reconstruction efforts of the Japan earthquake and the mysteries of Loch Ness, to the vistas of Greenland and the glories of the Amazon rainforest. Now, Street View can add one of the most active volcanoes in the world to its list — Mount Etna.

Those searching for the Italian mountain on Google Maps or Google Earth can now view the likes of Crater Silvestri up close at 2,000 meters above sea level, and in 360-degrees.

While Google’s famous Street View cars have become a familiar sight in roads and avenues around the world, the human-powered Trekker is seemingly becoming equally omnipresent in some of the most weird and wonderful places.

Apple is currently in the early stages of capturing its own Street View-style imagery, with cars hitting a myriad of cities around the world over the next couple of weeks. But it has a long way to go to catch up with Google.
