M stands for Marshmallow.

That’s the name of the new Android operating system, Android M. People were wondering what M would stand for — back in May my colleague Emil Protalinski threw out foods that start with M, like macaroon, marshmallow, milkshake, mint, muffin, marzipan, mooncake, and mango sorbet. Now it’s official.

Google confirmed the news in a blog post announcing the availability of the third developer preview of the operating system.

And Google developer Brandon Jones tweeted out the news today:

People thought the final name might be Marshmallow because of a video that arrived from Googlers Natalie Hammel and Lorraine Yurshansky, better known as Nat and Lo, a few days ago.

And here’s their latest video, from today:

Marshmallow is merely the latest version of Android, following Lollipop, KitKat, Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb, Gingerbread, Froyo, and Cupcake. (More on the 10-year history of Android here.)

Android M will ship this fall. For now, if you have a Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, or Nexus Player, you can sign up for a developer preview here.
