Google’s Nest camera and smoke alarm, but not thermostat, will return to Apple stores ‘in the next few weeks’

News broke Thursday that Apple had removed Nest Labs’ smart thermostat from its online and physical stores, but Nest says its other products will show up in the stores soon.

“Apple is a valued partner to Nest and our new products will be available through Apple and other retail channels in the coming weeks,” Nest said in a note to VentureBeat.

Neither Nest nor Apple would tell VentureBeat the reason that the thermostat was dropped. As it turns out the Nest product was removed earlier this month, and has apparently been replaced by another smart thermostat, the $249 Ecobee 3, which is connected to Apple’s connected home platform, HomeKit.

The “new products” Nest refers to are a new security camera, the $199 Nest Cam, and the second generation of the Nest Protect smoke alarm. Both of these products were announced in June.

If the thermostat was ousted from Apple Stores after a HomeKit-connected product showed up, Nest’s camera and smoke alarm seem in danger of suffering the same fate.

Nest has been adding ways for these products to work together, but Nest’s overarching home automation platform story — especially as it relates to Google’s Brillo Internet of Things operating system — remains fuzzy.

So Nest might be seen as a threat to HomeKit someday, but apparently that day hasn’t come.
