Google’s redesigned Play Movies & TV app for iOS gets HD streaming and cellular connectivity

Google has released a much-needed update to its Google Play Movies & TV iOS app that endows the software with both HD streaming and cellular connectivity. Prior to today’s update, the app had seen a decidedly tepid reception, earning just a 2.5 / 5 rating over 705 reviews.

Besides the resolution bump and expanded connection option, the app has gained third-generation Apple TV compatibility via AirPlay, according to the release notes. Also reportedly new to this version, 2.0.7910, are recommendations from the Play Store as well as the ability to “search and wishlist any movie from the Play catalog to manage in your Google Play account.”

Finally, the beleaguered app features a complete redesign in both its iPhone and iPad incarnations, possibly to help people forget that they once found it so distasteful.

The free program, which requires iOS 7.0 or later, is now available as an 18.8MB download from the iOS App Store.
