IBM throws all of its cloud stuff in one place: A marketplace

IBM sells so much cloud stuff these days: software, cloud infrastructure for running apps on, middleware for connecting apps and their operating systems, and even Watson tools for blowing through lots of data. Today, Big Blue followed other cloud companies and put all of its cloud wares in one central online location.

The IBM cloud marketplace packs 100 cloud software options, the company said today in a release about the new site.

Amazon Web Services, HP, Microsoft’s Office 365, Rackspace, Salesforce.com, and even Oracle maintain their own marketplaces for applications and other cloud tools.

Multiple technology companies are making their services available in the new marketplace, including PayPal, Redis, SendGrid, and Square.

The new cloud marketplace won’t transform IBM into the top public-cloud infrastructure provider overnight. Amazon has a huge lead, and Google is worth watching. IBM would need to do far more to compete in the commoditizing cloud infrastructure market. Still, today’s move could have the effect of helping IBM appear more like a portal for cloud infrastructure and apps, giving developers, IT admins, and businesspeople a common place for finding, testing, and buying cloud stuff.
