Tonight as Imgur celebrated its sixth birthday, CEO Alan Schaaf took to the stage to announce the launch of an official Imgur mobile app. The brand-spanking-new app will roll out tomorrow and will only be available on iOS.
Imgur is a popular image-sharing platform with deep ties to Reddit. It’s known for GIFs and quirky captioned photos, and most of all for its community of commenters.
The new app will give users access to content, comments, profiles, and collections, as well as the ability to upvote, downvote, and favorite. Users will be able to swipe right and left to view new photos and sort content by popularity and timeframe.
This is not Imgur’s first mobile app attempt. A few years ago, the company rolled out an app, but ultimately decided it wasn’t a great product and pulled it from app stores. Since then, a few third-party apps have stepped in to fill the void. But Imgur wanted to regain control of its mobile experience, especially as an increasing number of users are logging on from their phones.
The company won’t reveal what percentage of its user base are logging in via mobile, but Imgur boasts 130 million unique visitors every month.
Last April the company took $40 million dollars in funding, a portion of which could easily have fueled this latest app rollout (remember those all-star developers the company was looking to hire?). Imgur has since launched a few different products and made some strategic hires. Recently, Imgur pushed out a tool that morphs photos into GIFs and topic tags, to make content more easily searchable.
